Last Wednesday evening, the TUS Athlone community came together in the Douglas Hyde Theatre to celebrate Fr Shay Casey’s Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of priesthood and a lifetime dedicated to supporting students, staff, and the wider university community.

Fr Shay has long been a familiar and valued presence across campus, often described as “the heartbeat of Athlone since 1985.” Over the decades, his role as Chaplain has been defined by quiet consistency, care, and a deep commitment to students at every stage of their journey.

The celebration was organised by the TUS Alumni Office, following requests from graduates who were supported by Fr Shay during their time at the university—an indication of the lasting impact he continues to have on former students.

The evening centred on a fireside conversation between Fr Shay and alumnus Colin Fahy. Their discussion offered a reflective and personal account of Fr Shay’s journey, his experiences in Athlone, and the many moments of connection that have shaped his time at TUS.

This was followed by contributions from former students and retired staff, whose memories and words of thanks brought a strong sense of reflection and appreciation to the evening.

A message from former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, was also read on the night, recognising Fr Shay’s “extraordinary ministry to young people” and thanking him for “five decades of generous service, gentle wisdom, and faithful presence.”

Speaking on the evening, Fr Shay expressed his gratitude and humility, highlighting the sense of community that has defined his experience at TUS.

TUS President Professor Vincent Cunnane also paid tribute, acknowledging both the longevity and depth of Fr Shay’s contribution, particularly his support for students during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event was MC’ed by Donncha McNamara, Vice President for Internationalisation and Alumni at TUS, who spoke about Fr Shay’s enduring connection with the alumni community.

A meaningful celebration of 50 years of service, and a legacy that continues to be felt across the TUS community.
