Hi, my name is Kelsey, and my journey at TUS began after leaving cert. As a woman entering the construction industry, I was aware that it is a male-dominated space, and alongside having a learning disability, choosing the right course and learning environment mattered hugely to me. I knew I would thrive in smaller classes with a strong practical focus and TUS gave me exactly that.

From the outset, the support I received helped build my confidence. Smaller class sizes meant lecturers really got to know how I learned, taking the time to explain concepts in a clear, practical way. The hands-on nature of the course allowed me to fully engage with the material and play to my strengths, proving to myself that I belonged in the industry.

I completed my degree in Quantity Surveying, a course that combined academic learning with real-world experience. A major highlight was the year-long construction industry work placement, which gave me invaluable exposure to site life, teamwork, and professional responsibility. Placement became a defining moment in my professional journey not only did it confirm that construction was the right path for me, but it also led to full-time employment with the same company after graduation. Transitioning from student to graduate surveyor felt like a natural next step rather than a leap into the unknown.

During my final year, I completed a dissertation focused on the use of precast concrete in apartment developments as a potential solution to the Irish housing crisis. This allowed me to combine industry insight with academic research and explore innovative construction methods with real impact.

Although I commuted from home throughout college, I still fully experienced student life. From nights out to group projects and friendships that extended beyond the classroom, I found a strong sense of community at TUS. Balancing commuting with college life taught me independence, time management, and resilience. These are skills that continue to serve me well in my career.

Today, I work as a graduate quantity surveyor with John Paul Construction and am currently working towards my APC. Becoming an alumni ambassador feels like a full-circle moment, an opportunity to represent women in construction. With the right support, confidence, and opportunity, the construction industry can be a place where you can belong.
