Returning to education changed everything for Laura. From mature student to master’s graduate to family-support professional, her journey shows what’s possible when potential is nurtured.

Hi my name is Laura, my journey at TUS began when I decided to return to education as a mature student, at a time where I was seeking a new direction in life. While it felt daunting at first, the support I received from the beginning made the transition not only manageable but empowering.

I completed the BA in Early Childhood Care and Education (proudly graduating with First Class Honours in 2023) and continued to the MA in Early Intervention and Inclusive Practice for Children, a pilot programme designed to explore inclusive strategies for supporting children who experience adversity in their lives. Across both programmes, what stood out was the atmosphere — small classes, supportive lecturers, and a culture where students were truly known and encouraged. Lecturers took the time to challenge us, guide us, and remind us of our potential, fostering both confidence and growth.

On completion of the Masters programme, I found myself working in family support in a community based organisation. This role is rooted in empathy, connection and advocacy as I support parents and families to navigate the joys and messiness of everyday life. Support looks different to each family- for some it's simply a listening ear, for others it may involve practical strategies or one-to-one interventions

I also collaborate with schools, families , other professionals and services to achieve the best outcomes for children - it's very rewarding but certainly has its challenges .

Becoming an alumni ambassador feels like such a full circle moment for me -a chance to reconnect , share experiences and highlight the many paths education can open up.. even if it it's a little bit later than planned! 😊
